The Amish culture here captures my attention for several reasons. I love historical things and these people stay the course daily with their past. I love driving the now paved buggy paths and coming up to a one horse drawn buggy on the road. I open my window to hear the sound of hooves on road and squeak of handwrought wheel. Sometime I’m going to make it to an Amish auction where the horses are tested for temperment and gaited action. Standard Breds are the preferred with their fast high stepping trots
You often see the contrast between past and present in front of shops and bulk food stores.
This time of year the farmers are plowing and planting. The quiet solid pace of the draft horse, in my mind, far beats out the noisy horsepower of the John Deere. No wonder why their food tastes so much better !
